Uist Building Preservation Trust, in renovating the steadings, were keen to cut the electricity costs for the buildings and initiated a project to install a wind-to-heat turbine. Installation and commissioning of the turbine was achieved in June 2006 as a joint project between Nunton Steadings Limited and UBPT, the project being directly managed by Phil Ladyman.
The turbine is a 6kW Proven turbine and produces electricity which is used to charge a bank of batteries. Once the batteries are charged, the power is diverted into three 2kW wall heaters which provide heat for the function and tea rooms. In addition, the batteries act as an uninterruptable power supply which currently supplies all the lighting in the building and two 13amp circuits for use in the kitchen.
