This August, 8th to the 13th, sees the first music festival to be held at Nunton Steadings. Named Maighdean Mhara (Mermaid) after the Nunton Mermaid, which was washed up and buried at Nunton, it should prove to be the start of something special for contemporary music in Uist. This year the festival is headlined by Crash My Model Car who played at Nunton last December.

The festival opens on Friday the 8th August with a Ceilidh night, Ruitheam, part of the Western Isles Ceilidh Trail will be start the night followed by local band Bi Beo, who have just returned from a successful trip to Iceland where they went down a storm.

Saturday 9th is the big night, with CMMC appearing after Sounds Like April who supported them last December at Nunton. Ask Me Later will be warming the audience up at the start of the night with their original material and some covers to get people in the mood.

Monday 11th it is the turn of Yvonne Lyon, a superb female artist whose music is guaranteed to appeal to all. Her latest CD, A Thousand Questions Why, is a must have. In particular, Everything’s Fine is a stunning track which I hope Yvonne will perform. Supporting Yvonne are Ryan Dempsey and Paul Sloss.

Tuesday 12th is a night for you all to enjoy Meantime, who are touring the Highlands and Islands after the release of their new CD, An Treas Tarraing, which is a mix of new and traditional Gaelic music. Meantime will be supported by local artists.

Wednesday 13th and Meantime are back with a music workshop open to local and visiting musicians, this will take place during the day and will be followed by a wee performance, hopefully outside in the square at Nunton. This is a free event and we hope to see folk outside enjoying music and the weather!

Wednesday night is the closing night and we start off with Mick Drain who has just had his track, Marchetti Scheme, used for the recent Sex In The City film. After Mick, we close the festival with Dundee based band Page 6, who are guaranteed to get everyone up and dancing (if you can still stand after five nights of live music). Page 6 played this year at Rockness and are gaining a growing band of followers.
